One man’s riveting, contemporary journey through

multiple comings-out to authentically live his unique identity.

“I knew I was different, called ‘faggot-ass half-breed,’ teased for my light bright skin, soft curly afro, freckly face, and feminine ways.  Growing up the child of a black daddy and white momma in the black Gullah Geechee culture on James Island, South Carolina in the 80’s, I was an outsider.

“My adolescent identity crisis of racial and sexual confusion lead to a trip down the aisle with my high school sweetheart, the joy of fatherhood, and then into the shadows of the down-low before divorce and a tumultuous custody battle.  As I embraced all of who I am, I developed my voice, using it to speak out on the racial and LGBT equality movements, as well as to say ‘I do’ to marry the man I love and create a realistic 21st century blended family.”

“A powerful read on what it takes to be good enough as a Black man in America.  This inspirational memoir leads the reader to explore their beliefs and prejudices about the daily challenges of persons living with self-doubt, discrimination, and recrimination of being biracial and a member of the LGBTQ community.”

-Dr. Yvonne Blanchard-Freeman, CEO, Alliance for Global Education and Leadership

“A moving and spiritual rendition of intersectional oppression from one man’s biracial and bisexual roots in the Deep South during the 21st Century.  A gentle, courageous, and thought-provoking memoir full of unconditional love.”

-D.M. Scott, author of The Bungalow Journey

“I am really proud of my father for writing about his life and the challenges he faced. I know that people will be inspired by his book.”

-Gregory V. “Lil Gee” Smalls, Jr.

Most of my life I’ve lived trying to be enough. Black enough. Man enough. Strong enough. Skinny enough. Smart enough. Funny enough. GOOD ENOUGH. I am fortunate enough to have come out on the other side of knowing that I am already enough, just the way I am. I now know the work is in embracing this fact instead of trying to measure up to what other’s think is enough.

And you are enough too, just the way you are. I invite you to own that and set yourself free.
